We adopted Joey in June 1997 from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals shelter in Oakland, California. Our previous cat, Smokey, had died recently and we missed the special companionship that a cat brings to our home.
We decided to adopt a female adult cat since our place was really too small for active kittens and also because adult female cats sometimes spend a long time in a shelter before they find new homes.
Joey arrived at the OSPCA with her five little kittens. When the kittens were weaned, Josie was spayed. When we met her, Jellybean's naked little belly was still healing and she was so thin and tired. However, JoJo walked up to us when we approached her cage. She was purring loudly and giving us such a wistful look, so we told the shelter volunteer that we were interested in her. After a visit to the cat play room and an interview, we signed the adoption papers and brought Mademoiselle Gazelle home.
She has been delighful company for almost ten years now. As I write this, Josefina is sitting in my lap, purring loudly. She's so special!
