John Herschel was the son of William Herschel and the nephew of Caroline Herschel. He was a professional astronomer and cataloger. During his long career, he completed an extensive survey of the heavens visible from both the northern and southern hemispheres, and created a catalog of more than 5,000 nebulae and star clusters.
