star clusters

For images of star clusters, see NASA's Advanced X-ray Astronomy Facility "Chandra" site. The AXAF was renamed to honor Chandrasekhar.

Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was an astrophysicist and author who studied such weighty subjects as white dwarf stars and black holes. Toward the end of his long career, he published a collection of writings, Truth and Beauty: Aesthetics and Motivations in Science. The quotations on these pages are from this book.

" … [S]ometimes we have the application of the same set of ideas to problems which may appear entirely unrelated at first sight. For example, it is surprising to realize that the same basic ideas which account for the motions of microscopic colloidal particles in solution also account for the motions of stars in clusters."
